Doylestown Retirement Community Raises More than $500 to Help Build Schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan
Wesley Enhanced Living at Heritage Towers residents and Doyle Elementary School students Collaborate on International Fundraising Initiative
DOYLESTOWN, PA, June 18, 2009 /Seniors PR News/ -- During the month of May, residents and staff from Wesley Enhanced Living (WEL) at Heritage Towers retirement community, 200 Veterans Lane, collaborated with Doyle Elementary School fifth and sixth grade students on Pennies for Peace, an international fundraising initiative inspired by Greg Mortenson, renowned author of the book Three Cups of Tea and founder of the Central Asia Institute (CAI). Established in 1996, the Central Asia Institute (CAI) promotes and supports community-based education, especially for female students, in remote regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Throughout the month-long project, participants read and discussed Three Cups of Tea, a personal account of the challenges and triumphs Mortenson experienced in little-known, rural areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan. In addition to book discussions, residents and students learned about Afghani and Pakistani culture, created artwork related to Three Cups of Tee and raised $510 to contribute toward the CAI's development of schools. To gain deeper cultural appreciation, participants modeled traditions practiced by the villagers profiled in Three Cups of Tea by sitting on rugs, sharing tea and eating traditional fare.
On Thursday, June 4, the Pennies for Peace project culminated with a comprehensive exhibit of the students' artwork and the presentation of a video about Mortenson's experiences while building the schools.
