L'DOR V'DOR TOUCHES HEARTS IN THE COMMUNITY
Temple Beth Sholom's Homebound Senior Outreach Program Enters 5th Year
/Seniors PR News/ - LAS VEGAS, NV, May 22, 2007 - They come in wheelchairs and with walkers from assisted living centers all over Las Vegas," explains Ruth Goldfarb, chairperson and cofounder of the L'Dor V'Dor (from generation to generation) senior outreach program at Temple Beth Sholom. "It's truly a delight to see all the smiling faces as they interact among themselves, enjoy the lunch and entertainment program, and take part in activities with the day school children."
Ruth Goldfarb is talking about the only interactive outreach program of it's kind in Las Vegas. Now entering it's fifth year, L'Dor V'Dor has touched the lives of thousands of local homebound seniors, and has become so popular that attendees are expected to increase substantially again this year. Approximately 200-300 guests attend each L'Dor V'Dor function.
"One of our biggest challenges is reaching seniors who are isolated, and don't know this program is available," explained L'Dor V'Dor coordinator Shel Kohler. "We understand there is a large population of seniors living alone in trailer parks and homes, many without anyone looking in on them. Our hope is to find them, and include them in our events."
According to Goldfarb and Kohler, L'Dor V'Dor is especially appreciated by seniors who have lost their connection to the community as a result of immobility or a lack of financial resources. "Many of them are alone, and don't have family or friends to help," they concurred. "L'Dor V'Dor events gives them something to look forward to... they especially enjoy time with the kids.
"Interaction with the children of the day school is a big part of the program," relays Rabbi Felilpe Goodman. "The kids really look forward to joining the 'grand moms and grand pops' in activities, and the seniors have the opportunity to connect with the youngest generation of the community."
"It's a real joy to see the children with the seniors," added Mel Wolzinger, L'Dor V'Dor board member, champion and cofounder. "Whether the kids are performing, or working on projects with the seniors, it's always a meaningful experience."
Care givers aware of seniors who would like to be part of upcoming L'Dor V'Dor events are encouraged to contact the Temple Beth Sholom office at 702.804.1333 ext. 100. The program is free and open to the entire community. Courtesy transportation is available when needed.
